On a cold December night, Amal Abu Mandil, 40, woke up from her worst nightmare: a power outage at her small business, which was born out of war.<\/p>\n

For her, the sight of the power being cut off to the egg incubator she had obtained from \u201cOur Food from Our Hands\u201d initiative about two months earlier was terrifying. Nevertheless, she moved calmly, took a heavy wool blanket, wrapped her small incubator in it, and kept the eggs warm until the morning hours when the power returned to the incubator.<\/p>\n

Despite the return of power, Amal’s heart remained \u201con fire,\u201d as she tells us, and only calmed down when she saw with her own eyes the first chicks she had incubated chirping alive among the eggs. She thus became the first woman in Gaza to return to the world of poultry production, which suffered a major setback due to the Gaza war that broke out in October 2023.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cPal Stories\u201d visited Amal at her home in the Maghazi camp (central Gaza Strip) to talk about her project.<\/p>\n

In a corner bathed in the morning sun, Amal sat surrounded by her sons Raafat (13) and Ali (11), who were using a traditional wheat mill to grind lentils and barley so that the young chicks, the first to hatch in their incubator, could eat.<\/p>\n

The Israeli occupation continues to prevent poultry and animal feed from entering the Gaza Strip, so Amal has to grind barley and legumes that have been brought in to combat famine in Gaza. She is also forced to use expired poultry medicines under the supervision of specialists due to the lack of medicines in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

However, the biggest problem facing Amal remains the provision of energy in Gaza, where she uses batteries and bears the cost of a commercial generator. But the hardest thing for her is having to use the battery from her injured husband’s wheelchair to charge the incubator.<\/p>\n

The first hatch of that incubator whetted Amal’s appetite for a bigger project to restart poultry incubators in Gaza and restore her farm, which was destroyed by the occupation forces at the beginning of the war that caused the destruction of 96% of animal production in Gaza. Amal says, ” I had to do something. I thought about getting an incubator, even a primitive one, to produce chicks. I wanted to work on rebuilding the entire poultry chain in Gaza after it was destroyed by the war.”<\/p>\n

Looking back, it can be said that Amal was driven by difficult circumstances to pursue agricultural entrepreneurship. In 2014, her husband was shot by an Israeli soldier stationed on the eastern border of Gaza while he was farming his land, leaving him paraplegic.<\/p>\n

In 2019, Amal decided to change her life in order to save her family from economic decline. She began her learning journey at several associations and institutions specializing in agricultural entrepreneurship training, learning a lot about the basics of this work at the Future Generations Association, Tamer Institute for Community Education, and Gaza Forum for Urban Agriculture. Her passion for learning even took her to Jordan, where she obtained a diploma in community leadership and organization.<\/p>\n

Before the war broke out, Amal ran a project to market local eggs from small-scale farmers in marginalized areas of Gaza. She collected eggs from women farmers and sorted them into fertilized and unfertilized eggs, selling the former to hatcheries and the latter to the largest stores in central Gaza. She then expanded her project and moved on to establish her own farm on agricultural land near the eastern border of the Maghazi camp.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amal tells us that her project initially produced local chickens, then expanded to breeding and producing free-grazing sheep. Despite significant challenges, the project remained viable until the war began.<\/p>\n

With the start of the war, Amal was able to bring some of her sheep and poultry from the farm, but the simultaneous siege and the occupation’s prevention of poultry and animal feed from entering forced her to sell her sheep at a low price, while she fed her poultry to her family.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most important thing for me was to save my family, who were surrounded by death on all sides, so I had to leave everything behind and flee to the south,\u201d she says. Amal embarked on a difficult journey that led her to work in food manufacturing in order to provide for her children. ” I used to make and sell \u201cGhoriba\u201d (a type of cookie), and with the small profit I made, I would buy flour for my children, as the price of a kilo reached 100 shekels during the famine in Gaza.\u201c<\/p>\n

Despite all the challenges, Amal insists on her dream: \u201cI am not looking for big profits, but for security and continuity for my project.” Her ambition now is to expand and set up equipped incubators to rebuild what the war destroyed. Her story is not just an individual success story, but a testament to the resilience of Palestinian women who create life from the heart of death, proving that willpower can restart the \u201ccycle of life\u201d even in the darkest of circumstances.<\/p>\n
